1996
Costume seen on Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse
1999
Costume seen on an extra
2003
Costume seen on Mali Harries as Ann Rood
2007
Costume seen on an uncredited actress as a maid
2009
Costume seen on Laura Pyper as Jane Fairfax
This striped gown, initially designed for the 1996 film Emma has been reused for several movies and television series! Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse was the first to wear the dress, followed by an extra in Wives and Daughters in 1999. It was seen again on Mali Harries as Ann Rood in 2003’s Byron, an uncredited actress in the 2007 Miss Austen Regrets, and on Laura Pyper as Jane Fairfax in the 2009 production of Emma.
Interestingly enough, the same fabric appears to have been used in another gown seen on Dianne Kruger as Anna Holtz in Copying Beethoven in 2006, as well as on Gemma Arterton in her role as Tess in 2008’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It was also spotted on another gown worn by Laura Linney as Abigail Adams in the miniseries John Adams in 2008. Since Angels Costumes did the costumes for the 1996 Emma, and John Adams, as well as many various BBC miniseries, it may simply be that they have a bolt of this fabric on hand that they continually use.

Log in to ReplyLook what Agyness Deyn is wearing in “Sunset Song”: At first I thought ot might be Gemma Arterton’s dress from Tess as it roughly fits the timeframe. But that one looks to have another cut. So I probably present: number 5 😉 Greetings and good whishes, Anna

Log in to ReplyGreat research, Anna. Thanks! 🙂
Log in to Replynot sure it is really the same fabric on diane kruumlger as anna holtz, although it surely is VERY similar. i’ve found some high res pics of copying beethoven and tess: there is a bunch of green feathers/palm leaves printed on the stripes in tess’s fabric where there is only one on anna’s and on abigail adam’s. but one really can’t tell which is which on the regency-austen-dress. at least not withou high res pics.
Log in to Replyoops! I think the image from Copying Beethoven might be mistagged, as it isn’t showing up. 🙂
