Anna Massey was the first to wear this blue dress as Lady Frances Nelson in the 1982 television series I Remember Nelson. Polly Walker wore it next as Jane Fairfax in the 1996 Emma. 2001 saw the piece worn by Kitty Leigh as Miss Ledrock in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. The 2002 adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo used the dress on an extra, and finally in 2009 it was worn by Laura Pyper as Jane Fairfax in Emma.

  2. Jane Fairfax only has 5 costumes in that version, and I’ll bet all of them were recycled from something else. It’s also interesting to note that her two “main” outfits both received extensive alterations. You can see all of her costumes at the following link (scroll down)http://www.janeausten.info/moviegowns/Emma2/Emma2.htm
    (Too bad that site hasn’t been updated in years.)

  6. Here’s another screenshot from The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001), just to demonstrate that the criss-cross trim at the waist was added prior to 2002. (But the close-up on the balcony is still a better shot.)

  8. This dress also appears in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001), worn by Kitty Lee as Miss Ledrock, portraying Juliet in Mr. Crummles’s production of R&J.

  11. the dress is also on an extra (far right) in the “montechristo” feature film with jim caviezel, guypierce and henry cavill. not sure if shrewesbury lasses might have seen it first or captured the picture for another reason/dress. in any case, this piccie’s from her.
